"Someday" was 18 years ago. Remember "Tom-toms?"

Very innovative for GM, but there are obvious flaws in this navigation approach.  How many antennas would you need to bury at every intersection to navigate cross country?  What about when the roads needed repair or resurfacing?  It's a great idea but wouldn't be very reliable.  Satellites were in their infancy and probably never imagined for navigation.  Thirty years ago, the Federal Highway Administration partnered with GM and other companies to develop the Automated Highway System (AHS) with the cars communicating with the highway infrastructure, essentially making your car "self-driving".  I remember seeing this concept presented at the Oldsmobile exhibit in the mid-90's at the Los Angeles Auto Show.  It was supposed to be operational by 2006, but my guess is it was scrapped due to cost and emerging technologies.
