The '58 Oldsmobile has always had its critics. Seems most hate the styling, but one thing is for certain, and that is that a '58 Oldsmobile doesn't just blend in to the landscape and go unnoticed when one is spotted.
The front end was excessive with chrome and bulk, and the back end will forever be memorable.
Me personally, when I attend an old car show, I'd much prefer to see a '58 Oldsmobile in all its rarity, then to spot another line-up of '57 Chevy's.
The Oldsmobile gives me something to ooh and ahh over, while the Chevy is just another ho-hum.
Steve; I LOVE the tri-five Chevys and never tire of seeing them. I do agree with many Forum comments though that because they are so loved by collectors and done up as stock restored, rodded or customized, that people may tire of seeing them in large numbers. I think that is more the case rather than car fans just not liking them. I may be biased though as the '55 Bel Air is my favorite car of its class. Lol.
The Corvette is a different story. I love, love, love every Vette made; especially the '63 thru '67.
While you're not a fan of any Corvette, I fail to understand the 'love affair' with the '57 Chevy.
Hey, I'm with you on the Tri-Chevy's! They've been over-killed to the max. When I go to summer old car shows, there are always rows of them. Too much! There is no novelty in seeing one anymore...at least to my eyes. That's why when I see something rarer (like the '58 Olds above), I'm excited to see it and I enjoy giving it a long look. Doesn't mean I am a lover of it, but rather an admirer of what it represents in the total scheme of it all.

I don't disrespect anyone who loves and enjoys the Tri-Five Chevy's. And truth be told I like them, with the '55 being my favorite. But I think seeing them in abundance at car shows, they become uninteresting. Line-up a row of them at a car show, and I'll walk right by them. But have one or two not so popular cars there, and I'm all over them like flies on potato salad at a church picnic.
For me the '55 was the best Chevy design. Tri-fives, love the '55, like the '57, don't care for the over done '56. Dislike the '58 & '59 Buick & Olds. i don't know if true or not but I have heard from more than one source that there is more '57 Chevy Bel Airs today than GM actually made. People take any model and restore it as a BelAir.

I think the story you've heard about General Motors is true, but I've heard it a little differently over the years. The way I've heard it is, GM actually produces parts and accessories for the '57 Chevy. I'm guessing that some form of your version of the story and mine, could be fact. Now this said, you and I are 100% in disagreement on the '58 and '59 Buick and Oldsmobile's. Especially the '59's, they are drop-dead gorgeous and to my eyes the two best styled cars from any of the Big Three for that year. I'd throw the Pontiac in that '59 mix too.
George, I have no problem with the '58 & '59 Pontiac. What really turned me off was the'58 Buick or Olds with the diving platform on the back or the old butt wart. Great if you like calling attention to your ride.

No fair. Your two photos would be butt-ugly to anyone with any common sense. But they were not the norm. Those "warts" are horrific on any car. I do however agree with you that anyone that puts them on their car, is certainly bleeding for attention. Sadly, though attention they might get, it also makes them a laughing stock.
