Janis Joplin was successful professionally in her sadly short and troubled life but to be honest her voice has always grated on my senses. Even as a teen I couldn't listen to an entire song; still that way today.  I believe I'm in a minority though. Lol.

@jack-dodds. Certainly some of her songs and style is an acquired taste but I may I suggest her version of Me and Bobby McGee, To Love Somebody, and Little Girl Blue that has her vocal talent less “grating”.

I loved her. I always thought she could put more feeling and emotion into one note than many other singers could in their entire career. She was a force of nature in concert!

......she was one of a handful I saw in concert !!!.......I think,in modern day,Dana Fuchs can give her a run for the money (4:25 is as good a place as any for the impatient among us to begin the video)
