Here is an advertisement for the great-looking Buick Special for 1956. Many times back then, artists renderings were used to ideally show an automobile. In this case, the attractive lady in the back seat will exit the big 4-door Buick ........... and fall directly into the harbor !

This rendering makes the car look realistic but most ads from the day make the cars look much lower and wider than they actually were.

Though as Mike points out, the people look as though they've shrunk in the wash - which does affect the car's proportions.

Photography itself, intentionally or unintentionally and for various reasons can itself sometimes alter what is seen, the proportions, color, etc.

Photos can very much be truth .....or they might not be.

But we decide what is right .....and which is an illusion. (apologies to the Moody Blues and "Nights in White Satin")

I love those old ads from magazines.  As many of you here may remember, I've got my garage walls covered with ads of old cars.  A couple of years back I shared many of the photos here in the Lounge.

Just like the ads on TV for the burgers that we buy that don't look anything in person like the ones on TV....lol.

@100ford2003 I love The Moody Blues; particularly Nights In White Satin.

As many of you know.... GM was notorious for using nothing but illustrations in new-car ads & brochures right through to the 1960's.  The reasons are obvious, cars could be "stylized"  and anything else (including people ) could be drawn smaller to highlight interior room, tail-fin height, etc.

Lincoln was among the first OEMs, in the 1950's, to feature actual color photos of their offerings.

Those Lincolns look great and very colorful ! And, of course, photographs never alter the absolute truth ..... ummm, do they ? Grin

The Moody Blues were a great band, in  my view. Their longevity was incredible and the whole album "Nights in White Satin" was an earlier, whole album/concept along the lines, and at the same time, as the Beatles amazing and all-time classic, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
