Taking in account the last, say 40 years of your life, can you still believe in global warming ?
Please tell me where you live ?.
Yes, after living in the southern Appalachians for a full lifetime, I think our winters are now colder, and the average summer temperatures are tending higher. Those figures are born out by averages from the last several decades, even though we have only a century of such figures for guidance. The problem many of us have is focusing on today or maybe last week, while we need to look at decades and, if possible, centuries.
It's a scientifically proven thing, there's no denying its validity.
And I'm saying that as someone who's been around for only 37 years, but the proof is all there in the pudding.
No. Metro Detroit.
Saint Clair Shores, Michigan
Sunny (Very Humid) Central Florida .. Hurricane Alley ... O Heck yeah !!!! .....
... And I've only been here for a lil over 20 years
Not a believer in the doom & gloom of it all...I think most of it is a ruse...
Really? By whom, and for what reason? Stats don't lie, and they clearly document melting ice caps and glaciers, and increased temperatures. Who would perpetrate such a "ruse?"
No! It’s all BS. Read the politically incorrect guide to climate change by Marc Mariano.
No. I live near Chicago, Il. For many years, from parts of elementary school through graduate school, scientists and others were shouting dire claims about a "coming Ice Age" caused by man. Then, a sudden change to "global warming" ....... followed by another change to "climate change" (when necessary) to cover all their bases.
They have been caught withholding and altering data and rely on constantly changing "computer models" (GIGO anyone ?) One of their top champions secretly congratulated other scientists on hiding contrary data.
This is a very tricky path to navigate because this issue seems to polarize people and from different political factions.
The term global warming is misleading instead the more correct, climate change, is now in more common use and is preferred.
I live in New Zealand, Joop and opinions over climate change vary as much in this country as they do anywhere else.
Earthquakes, Tsunami's, volcanic eruptions and the man made effects of agricultural pollution, in the form of cow shit, and large scale forestry, are our big worries here. This countries biggest export earner however is in fact people - tourists who flock here by the plane load and leave a ragged foot print to mark their presence.
Immigration also puts greater pressure on the countries infrastructure and resources. And like most Western Style economies our leaders are paralyzed by fear of the economy suffering if corrective measures were introduced.
While Global Warming is occurring its not the defining issue. In some places extreme weather conditions of Hot and Cold are being experienced - hence Climate Change.
Ever since the planet became Earth there has been climate change - this is incontestable.
Geologically, we live on a fairly young planet that is still cooling down so naturally changes will occur and this affects climate and the frequency of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
The fire in the belly over this comes about when discussions turn to: is this man made or not? Well, clearly this is a factor, but depending on where your political allegiances lay there will be two differing view points.
Very broadly speaking though and only partially true: conservatives vote Global Warming/Climate Change is a hoax, while more liberal thinkers hold fast to the doom and gloom perspective - these are the extremes.
The reality though is that there is a mixture of thought across the political divide.
Much of the information we receive is tainted by vested industrial interests who proffer hired gun scientific reports to support their position and the politicians who take the "Kings Shilling" and so must perform accordingly leading us to wonder what the truth really is.
I believe that there is enough empirical evidence to suggest that climate change is a fact and that for several generations into the future our off spring will have a whole lot of trouble to deal with. By that time all of the rhetoric going on these days will be irrelevant - the truth will by then, speak for its self.
But in any event, this forum is mostly about model cars and our collective enjoyment of models and motor cars. A hot button issue such as Climate Change is best left to the scientists to explain to us. Forget whatever bozzo politicians say to us, they only care about giving voice to their financial backers and winning the next election.
I generally enjoy the fun and games on The Lounge...
sharing opinions, laughs, jokes and everything else with a wide range of folk from different countries, of different opinions, etc. Everyone is laid back, says what they think, and everything is taken in good part without anal and occasionally nasty comments solely about model cars with the correct number of rivets, shade of colour, material, etc.. To me that is the strength of this Forum.
However, I am concerned that the global warming/climate change situation is dismissed as being of no relevance by some. The fact that things are changing is indisputable and huge chunks of polar ice shelves falling into the sea, rising pollution levels, more and more extreme weather, extensive fires, earthquakes, etc are not made up - there is photographic proof every day on news channels round the world. Personally I have no time for politicians who, as others have said, are very often out for personal glory and gain, whatever their political persuasion. Most of us have governments where we are ruled by amateurs who rise to power and suddenly know more than experts in whatever field you care to mention. We have just been subjected to an extreme right wing government who were not chosen by the majority in a general election but a small minority of party members, which smacks of dictatorship rather than democracy.
I fear for future generations who will have to cope with the fallout from decisions made now. We are, the majority of us, old and won't be affected, but I question whether it's right to ignore what is happening, say it's all hokum, and carry on regardless. Having now put you all to sleep I'll climb into my fossil-fuelled diesel engined car, get the shopping which is largely packed in single-use plastic, and I guess carry on regardless.
I don't know either way, but this brings up another issue and question
Whether (or weather) you believe in man-made global warming or not, where does the money go that is collected from carbon credits?
Carbon credits is something like a tax. The governments around the globe tell a business how much pollution they can vent into the atmosphere. If they make more pollution than allowed, they have to buy 'carbon credits', and that allows them to make more pollution.
To summarize, if you need to break the governments rules, you can pay them money for your extra mess, but that extra money does not go to cleaning up your extra mess.
Where does that money go?
We are not talking chump change here... the money collected is in the Billions with a B.
No I don't believe in climate change and I am in Everett, Washington.
Just my old mans opinion and yes I do respect others opinions and still like to have fun here and enjoy all the gas guzziling big old cars pre emmison and all.
Have a great day everyone.
Victoria, British Columbia. There are various experts and scientists who disagree on this very important topic; plus there is of course the usual largely unqualified bile thrown about by politicians around the globe. As a non-expert I can't really state a qualified opinion but I do tend to be impressed by the melting polar ice. It scares the hell out of me; not for me personally but for following generations. The most important contribution we must make asap is of course to clean up our planet. The oceans are apparently a mess which is killing marine life rapidly. Air quality is a no-brainer. Soil and ground water pollution is obvious. Weather patterns seem to have changed FOR SOME REASON. Its time!
Call it whatever you want, according to the National
Weather Assoc every decade from 1920 on has averaged hotter than the previous decade. And a lot of people don't believe it, and a lot of people want to tell you what's causing it although the one thing we don't talk about, it's plastic, it's your car, it's the local power plant and even, it's cow manure. What about the 100 degree each things that are over populating the planet? Or is the planet not really over populated?
