This is just the opposite of today's millennials trying to drive a manual transmission car...it's called theft prevention.
....I witnessed this "blond story" firsthand, sort of.
About 100 years ago, a woman working for me (I was her boss) said she couldn't get her car started. It was a newer car; I was a bit puzzled but offered to help. I repeatedly turned the key but "nothing." She had opened the hood.... as I got out to take a look, I noticed something but "checked the engine" anyway. I pretended to fiddle with a few wires, then told her to start it (knowing it wouldn't start). I repeated this process. Then, I got back in the car and made one little adjustment (knowing it would start now). I returned to the engine, fiddled again, and told her to, "Try it now." It fired right up, she was ever-so-grateful, and I looked like a genius boss.
She was trying to start the car with the gearshift in "N." My "one little adjustment" was to put it in "P." I NEVER had the heart to tell her..... 😇 😇Â
