1958 was a recession year in the U.S. but there were still many beautiful '50's automobiles released, in my view. My folks and neighbors on either side of us all got new 1958 cars, a Chevrolet, a Pontiac and an Oldsmobile.
That year my folks took our family to Miami Beach on a vacation and we rented a 1958 Ford to use. I recall a story that my Dad briefly got the convertible Fairlane up to 100 mph on the Sunshine Parkway just to quickly see if it could do that ! Perhaps even a youngster named Michael was aboard for the 30 second "test".........
Anyway, years ago I used my SunStar 1/18 1958 Ford Fairlane to photoshop my diecast image and see the car being slightly changed vertically and with 3 tail-lights, enlarged fins and dual radio antennas.
I like the '58 Ford just the way it originally is but it is a strong design and can even handle some changes and alterations.
....interesting. Surely, somewhere.... there are a few 1950's design proposals that looked similar to this before it was "watered-down." Doing 100 mph was risky but fun!
hey I really like that. Fins are extravagant but not in an obtrusive way. @geoff-jowett +1. Great vision and even better photo Mike!
It is quite possible that Ford stylists had all sorts of ideas for the Thunderbird-inspired 1958 car. Perhaps something with larger fins and a different tail-light treatment was kicked around by the designers and artists for that year.
