The 1969 Lola #6 Penske Sunoco T70 MklllB Group 7 sports prototype was designed by Eric Broadly, fielded by Roger Penske and driven by Mark Donahue and Chuck Parsons to a win at that year's 24 Hours of Daytona. It was powered by a 5.0 liter Chevrolet V8 tuned to 500 HP. Despite spending an inordinate amount of time in the pits with broken header pipes, a fuel pickup issue and a starter motor failure, it won that race by an unbelievable 30 laps. This was to be a prelude to the 1969 Le Mans event, but after the race, their transporter was stolen with the car in it. The car' chassis was later recovered by Donahue, the engine was ripped out of it and gone. That was the end of this famous cars career. Another "One and Done".
The model is an early GMP product released in 2000. The doors are sealed so the interior was shot through the glazing. The engine bay can be exposed and the Sunoco livery with its delicate pinstriping is really well done over a flawless dark blue finish.
Penske Sunoco liveries are always so precise and elegant, just a terrific indication of the technical work on the rest of the car.
Precise? Elegant? That's how Penske rolls! Those characteristics are the M.O. of the Penske organization. Everything is done to the "nth" degree! Excellence is required in every element in all areas. Indeed, Roger Penske has served as an example I've tried to emulate in everything I do, especially in my business endeavors.Penske Sunoco liveries are always so precise and elegant, just a terrific indication of the technical work on the rest of the car.
The Lola T70 is one of my favorite race cars - I've got 9 examples of it - but the 3B coupes are without doubt my favorites
I'm also a Penske fan and he is one of only two racing organizations that I have given separate shelves to. The rest of my collection is displayed by car manufacturer. Interestingly the other team is Scuderia Filipinetti which makes this a favorite photo of mine. The Spark SF model is actually a more accurate representation of the 3B but as it is a non-opening model it doesn't come up to the level of the GMP model.
The most detailed are the Exoto MK3 models - It's a shame they never got to make a 3B.
