This special light weight with its aerodynamic body by Touring was built for the 1938 24 hours of Le Mans. The car driven by Biondetti and Sommer forged ahead of the pack only to blow a tire. Sommer managed to get the car in the pit and took off again having put 160 km between them and the second place. In the latter stage of the race, however, they blew a valve and did not finish. They did have the fastest lap time at 154.78 km/h.
This model by CMC has almost more detail than is possible to take in and is perfectly scaled save for the bonnet cover which should have been made with stamped sheet metal instead of a bulky diecast piece that not only doesn't seat flush with the body but also leaves huge panel gaps. It drives me nuts. For a CMC model, it's inexplicable and inexcusable IMHO.
Wonderful model with incredible detail. I am very surprised that CMC would slip up with the heavy diecast bonnet. They are usually most paricular but they do make the odd error. Still, I'd love to own it. Thank for another great post Rich.
beautiful model in a striking color. That is frustrating about the bonnet, especially considering what these cost.
@gavin and, of course, for all that model has to offer, it's always the first thing I see.... it drives me crazy!
Despite that flaw, it's a fabulous model which sadly is missing from my collection. I hesitated and now it's too late unless I'm willing to pay a bazillion Simoleons for it.
