After WWl, BMW transitioned from building aircraft engines to motor cars to stay afloat after the Armistice cut the air force to the bone. Tailoring their cars to the disastrous economy of the 1920s and early 30s, the second half of that decade allowed BMW to start producing higher end products. Produced from 1936 to 1940 (when BMW was forced back into aircraft engine production), their 328 series were quite popular among sporty car consumers with some 464 built. Powere by a 2.0 liter straight OHV 6, it produced 79 HP at 5000 rpm. In its 2.0 liter class, it was a consistent winner from '36 to '40 in both rally and endurance racing. This AUTOart model of the 1938 Mille Miglia winning car marked the last year of the roadster body for racing being replaced by an aerodynamic Touring-bodied coupe.
It looks like a wonderfully detailed replica and would certainly make a remarkable model automobile to display in one's collection. BMW and many of the other German car manufacturers have had a long history and this scale car example displays an important part of that.
