1970 CanAm Championship Car - McLaren M8D driven by Denny Hulme

Anytime I do mods on a car, I seem to get an attachment to it that I don't have for most cars that just go right from the box to the display case. This one was merely a number and driver change with a few new contingency stickers thrown in for good measure done to the #48 Dan Gurney car which was the only M8D put into production, but this #5, because of its rarity, is one of my favorites. Putting the side #5's on was somewhat of a challenge and took 6 months thinking-through before I jumped into it.

One of the original 3 or 4 sample cars is on ebay right now with a couple of days to go and the price at $450. But because GMP's McLaren licensing agreement expired before they built this one, the pre-pro samples and this one may be the only ones in existence. Can you tell which track this was supposed to be ?

(PIC) I'm being thick, Bill, but I don't understand your question about the track.

Your modifications make a flamboyant model that really looks the part!

Ron Dennis and Tyler Alexander with the McLaren M8D on the 40th anniversary of Bruce McLaren's death at Goodwood in the McLaren Technical Centre at Woking. 'A minute of silence and a minute of noise' - the M8D was fired up in honour of McLaren and his huge legacy.

Paul Normand, Thick ? I doubt it !

McLaren pretty much lived race-to-race on the CanAm circuit according to Denny Hulme in an interview with Pete Lyons. The people that sponsored them, Chevrolet, Reynolds Aluminum, Bosch, Goodyear and, of course, Gulf helped defray their costs with season-long sponsorships.

But some sponsors only came on for one race and Coca-Cola did that for the 1970 Road Atlanta CanAm, since Atlanta is the headquarters for Coke. Hence the small Coca-Cola sticker on the car's rear flanks.

And you can't show everybody that picture without the wonderful video (make sure your sound's on) that goes with it.
