So.... "complicated, convoluted & confusing replicas"  seems to be your thing, right?  This thing could be the star in Back to the Future 5,  WITHOUT added props or special effects!  This is one crazy machine. 😬 😬

I have the Minichamps Penske/Donohue 917/30, which I believe was released before the Exoto. The back opens but not the front. That Exoto is a marvel.

I have the Minichamps as well & you're right, it was released before the Exoto.  The Exoto is an incredible model, but the Minichamps is very good as well.  No regrets here, its one of my favorite racing Porsches.  Was lucky to see the 1:1 at the Petersen Museum in LA a number of years ago.

Marvellous models all. Thank you gentlemen for a fine post. Love the super detail on that Exoto but all here are lusted after. I have examples in 1/43 but these larger versions are over the top.

I picked up the model and rolling chassis bundle when Tony K was dumping the set cheaper than the original model went for. I picked up the Chaparrel 2E bundle the same way. I never could figure out why he dumped them on the market and in 6 months was selling them for 3X the original MSRP.
