Fine images of this extremely well-done Chevrolet Caprice. It certainly was seen everywhere back then, from civilian, to police cars to taxi cabs. Nice replica !
@michaeldetorrice +1 ....and one has to appreciate that oh-so-nicely-done pinstriping! MCG also produced nice looking, sealed diecast, Police cars - IMO, better than Greenlight's - but I chose GL's LAPD only because the doors opened & the wheels steer. If MCG ever produces a 1/18 non-sealed model, odds are.... I'll buy it! 😀

@chris unfortunately, the GreenLight Caprices are severely underscale ☹️
see for yourself
the headlights are hideous, too

Actually Viacheslav, that's incorrect. Your MCG is severely over-scaled. See for yourself:
It's VERY true that GL's headlights are terrible, as you noted. Greenlight produced several years/versions of these headlights - mine are the worst. 😫
However, with regard to dimensions compared to the actual car - a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Sedan - GL's version scales out to be slightly off in length BUT close enough on all other specs.
Measure your MCG against the real thing and you'll see for yourself. Furthermore, here's a few comparison pics of GL vs. UT's 1996 Caprice. They look "right." It appears that 1985 BOS Oldsmobile station wagon is also over-scaled - you should measure it (I don't own it ). 🤔 🤔 🤔
-Act. L = 212"
- GL L = 208"
- Act. W = 75"
- GL W = 72.2"
- Act. H = 56"
- GL H = 54.2"
- Act. wb = 115.9"
- GL wb = 117"
@chris I'll measure the MCG Caprice and BoS Olds wagon when I get home (I'm at work right now) and the I'll come back to you with the results.
BTW, when you measured the GL Caprice width, where exactly did you measured it? Front/back bumpers, doors handles, side mirrors? So I could measure the MCG and BoS in the same place.
I also just received the two-tone red Caprice. I was somewhat disappointed by the pinstripe and how it does NOT follow the stamped crease in the quarter panels. To add accuracy, one might paint the body-colored rocker panel below the chrome trim black. A link for many pics of a real car is below. This still a fine replica for the price.

Hey! Shouldn't you be working? LoL 😀 😀 😀
I measured exactly those dimensions specified by GM.
That is, I measured GL's overall length, width, height and wb (wheelbase ) then calculated those to scale 1/18 inches then compared those specs to GM's specs for a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice sedan.
Because GL is a bit short, I suspect your MCG will measure out properly on length, but based on your pics, might be a bit wider than it should be - even though GL is a hair narrower than it should be.
Height looks about right on both cars, and wb is a hair long on the GL. I can't tell what MCG's wb might be.
I look forward to your reply-post. 😏
Nice models but too new for my collecting area. These "square Chevys" were fantastic cars; I would love to have a low-miler today as my daily driver. I drove them as police cars for many years; they took incredible punishment and stood up much better than the Ford equivalent at the time. My department would trade the fleet in at 160,000 KMs (100,000 miles), at which time they were usually snapped up by taxi companies. The cabbies loved them, even with that kind of history; which I suppose is a great testament to them.
@chris No, I mean, the length is measured from bumper to bumper, but it's not that easy to measure the width. The car is not rectangular in shape, it is more narrow at bumpers and wider around doors, and the mirrors also add in width. So where exactly you measured the model's width? I'll measure mine at the same place.
Oh, I understand now - sorry, I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer. 🙄 🙄
- For width, I measured the front bumper, but as YOU noted, that's NOT what GM measures. They spec the widest section - usually the center or passenger areas. So perhaps GL is spot on. 🤔 🤔
- For length, I measured bumper to bumper.
- For height, from the ground (a flat surface ) to the highest point on the top.
- For wb, obviously, center to center.
Below are the measurements of the MCG Caprice
(measured with a steel ruler, measurement error is 2 mm, or 1,5'' in actual size)
Act. L = 212,8"
MCG L = 218" (308 mm)
GL L = 208"
Act. W = 75"
MCG W = 76,5" (108 mm)
GL W = 72.2"
Act. H = 56"
MCG H = 54.2" (78 mm)
GL H = 54.2"
Act. wb = 115.9"
MCG wb = 115,5" (163 mm)
GL wb = 117"
As we can see, all measurements of the MCG model but length are consistent with actual measurements of the real car.
The greater length (5 extra inches, or 6 extra mm of the model) can be due to more protruding bumpers on the model.
So.... basically:
GL is too short, MCG is too long, height is equal but a hair off on both, wb is a hair too long on GL, but spot on for the MCG, and the GL is a hair narrower (measured at the bumper) while MCG is hair wider.
Thus, neither is perfect, with the MCG being a bit longer & wider while the GL is a bit narrower w/a longer wb. Interesting info. that I never deemed necessary as the GL appeared in scale with all my other Police cars.
Thanks for the post!
Two more photos just to illustrate the point that the MCG extra length is due to wider plastic inserts between bumpers and the body, while the main body proportions are more or less correct.
If one is really annoyed by this, it is quite doable to remove the bumpers, saw off or grind down couple of millimeters of the blue paint, put the bumpers back and have a car of correct proportions.
But a smaller width of GL's can only mean a too narrow body (and this is unfortunately can not be fixed).
I'd love to put the GL 1980 white Caprice next to my MCG Caprices (SFPD, NYPD, Chicago police, yellow cab, blue FBI car and three two-tones), but it would look too small next to them.
