Once again Zora Argus-Duntov launched another project in 1962 to create a Corvette to race in European GT World Championship events with these Grand Sport cars that were finished in 1963 as the production C2s were released. They had a tubular 'birdcage' frame to support the fiberglass panels that made them 800 lbs lighter than the production car. They were powered by a 550 HP 377 cid V8 with 4X2bbl Weber carburetors. Only 3 coupes and 2 roadsters were built before, once again, GM cancelled the project. They survived only because they were sold off to privateers. Their first victory was the '63 Watkins Glen, then at the Nassau Speed week, winning both the Governor's Trophy and winning in Prototype class, the Nassau Trophy Race. In 1964, 3 GSs entered were unsuccessful at Sebring but Roger Penske went back to Nassau and won the Trophy race again. By 1965 they were behind Ford and Ferrari at Sebring and Daytona, but could still beat the Cobras at SCCA events.
These 27 year old Exoto models are still impressive, but I'm having a hard time finding my pics after google shut down my Picasa program, so here's a coupe as run in the '64 Augusta USRRC.... and I still can't find the roadster
Great pics! LOVE the washboard hood on this iteration! At one point, Tony K. sent me a plethora of these Grand Sports. One by one, I let go of them and shame on me,
I did pick up the entire collection of Universal Hobbies 1/43rd scale Grand Sport series, all ten of them. It somewhat soothes the wound.
I'm a Ford guy too! Always have been! And what I've done to my logos on my car has lots of people scratching their heads. When they ask me why I have Ford logos on my car, I tell 'em I'm a Ford guy and I don't drive Chevies! LOL!Just love these cars - and this coming from a Ford guy
