In 1956, Jaguar halted their racing program and were left with 25 D-Type chassis. To recoup some of their losses, these 25 chassis were to be converted to street legal roadsters... the XKSS. The body was redesigned incorporating cues that would appear again in the XKE. AS part of the street legal additions, XK140 tail lamps were employed. All of these cars were destined for the North American market. Total production ended when a factory fire destroyed the 9 chassis that were yet to be completed, so only 16 of these cars were built and sold. Of course, Steve McQueen managed to buy one for his personal use painted in BRG, referring to it as the "Green Rat" ("OUCH!"). This car now resides in the Petersen Museum. In March, 2016, Jaguar announced it would hand build the remaining 9 cars as a "continuation" giving them the missing chassis numbers. If you have a cool million dollars lying around, you can have one of these rare cats.
Superb details on this great looking Jaguar model ! I'm guessing this is from Exoto or AutoArt ?
@mikedetorrice It's an AUTOart model, Mike.
Awesome looking model @rich-sufficool, love the styling. These were dirt cheap (not the McQueen version, but the other 2 colors) for a while & for some reason, I never picked one up. I did pick up a D-Type, which I love.
I saw McQueen's at the Peterson a few years back. I went again last week & it was gone...likely to the Vault.
