Amalgam on left Spark on right, left from tires.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, front fender flair, the Amalgam is more compact and tighter to the fender, the Spark is larger.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, left rear tires, the Amalgam has additional stamped writing in the sidewall like the real tires, the Spark does not.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, the door opening latches are represented on both cars, the Amalgam is not angled upward as much as the Spark, the Amalgam also has more design detail to the door latch than the Spark.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, the headlight covers are correct on both, the Amalgam has more detail to the covers, both have the front side marker light. You can't see it in this photo but the Spark left headlight cover is cloudy likely from the glue.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, you can see the 3D hood latches on both, the Amalgam latches are smaller and more to scale, the Spark latches are larger.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, the radiator is aluminum color on the Amalgam and is black on the Spark, the Amalgam has the light in the center of the front grille per a rules change for 1969.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, the headlight covers are correct for both, the Amalgam has more detail and the Spark is not as detailed. The head lights show up in both, the Amalgam shows a sealed beam which would be correct for the period, the Spark shows a bulb witch I don't think is correct.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, the driving/fog light are both well done with the Amalgam having more detail over the Spark, again the Amalgam has a sealed beam where the Spark has a bulb.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, you can see the back side of the radiator the Amalgam is aluminum color and the Spark black, the spark has an extra cooler on the left side of the radiator.
Amalgam on left Spark on right, both have clearance light on the right front, the orange paint is correct on both cars with the upward slope, the Amalgam Gulf decal is placed correctly as well. You can a little difference in the headlight covers in this photo.

Amalgam on left Spark on right, here is a right side view of both cars at an angle.
Amalgam on left Spark on Right, here you can see Amalgam has the electric shut off switch on the left side behind the door, the Spark does not have this.
I find the blue and orange on the Amalgam work well together while the lighter blue on the spark the orange dominates the blue more. I think the Amalgam is closer to scale than the Spark is overall.
Both cars are nice, the Amalgam clearly is more detailed but the Spark still is a nice car for a collection. You have to decided if the price of the Amalgam 1/18 scale cars are worth it for you, if detail is important then the Amalgam wins hand down.
These cars clearly were not done in the same factory off of the same tooling, there are several visual differences to the bodies as well as other hardware. The Spark is made in China, the Amalgam does not say were it is made but this one shipped out of Hungary.
If detail is your main point and you want one car in your collection that has great detail then an Amalgam might be the right product for you. Clearly there is a market for the Amalgam 1/18 scale cars or they would not be making them. Someone is buying the Amalgam 1/18 scale cars and I was one of those people. If I was rich I might have more Amalgam 1/18 scale cars heck I would get the 1/8 scale 1969 Ford GT40 MKI Le Mans winner but I don't have $21,995 to spend on a model.
I hope this was entertaining for everyone and provided a little bit of information about each of these cars from Amalgam and Spark.
Great re-cap, review & comparison photo-shoot. You seem quite happy with the level of detail & accuracy exhibited on these two; it all looks fantastic to me....but then again, I don't know what I'm looking at.... 😏 😀
Amalgam, as you know, also offers weathered versions, which I find fascinating. Keen eyes will note spot-on authentically placed grime & dirt. Trust me (and no doubt Rich will confirm ) it's not as easy as it looks. Amalgam models, not unlike high-end 100-point show cars, are truly more like a combination of art, historical accuracy, and privilege. Nice post John, thanks!
Thank you for all of the effort of presenting the comparison of the GT40 Mark I cars by Amalgam and Spark. Very entertaining and informative and especially of the Amalgam. You are the ONLY person I am aware that actually owns one of these masterpieces. It's great to hear thoughts from "the horses mouth."
