I don't collect dragsters because they are so big length wise, however we went to the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and knowing that Don is now in his mid eightes I decided to purchase this 1/18 scale Swamp Rat III front engine dragster.Â
The stories of Drag Racing and Don Garlits are synonymous, they grew up together.Â
Swamp Rat III built by Don Garlits and driven by Connie Swingle set a 1961 World Record in Thompson, Ohio. The year was 1961 and after an engine explosion that nearly cost him his life, Don decided to retire, again. Connie Swingle replace Don as the car driver and drove Swamp Rat III to a World Record 7.88 Second - 198.66 MPH. The car was ultimately lost in a crash and the car and trailer destroyed in a drainage ditch in Savannah, GA. Some pieces were recovered to use on the car now resting in the museum.Â

I did find what I think is an error by GMP, the box says the speed record set was 198.66 MPH but on the body work of the car it has 198.96 MPH, I think GMP made a slight mistake. It is hard to find information because there were different records that we're on the car at different times. There were also three different version of Swamp Rat III the "a", "b" and the "c" car.Â
