Burago + maisto

I would like some advise on selling my sons collection of 26 cars all 1/18 scale. They have been in my attic for 20yrs wrapped in tissue paper, none of them boxed but in good condition
What would they be worth? Please

Hi Sue, this question/scenario comes up quite a bit on the forum. In a nut shell, here's your....

...answer. I assume, because you wrote "Burago + Maisto," that all 26 1/18 models are made by either company. If not, please let "us" know.

Unfortunately, Burago & Maisto models (although some do look terrific and most have many working features) are about the most inexpensive to purchase. As used models, not in boxes, (although boxes-in this case-really wouldn't add any value) you could expect $5.00-$10.00 each. There could be one or two in that group that might fetch $15.00

Therefore, when I do the math you should expect $150.00 to $270.00. Basically, if you sell all of them for less than $85.00 you gave them away. If, however, you receive more than $300.00 you did great!

Sue, I hope this info helps, good luck.
-Chris

It also depends on how you sell them. You can expect less selling them as a lot than if you were to sell them individually. Since we do not know the individual cars. a good way to see what buyers are willing to pay is to check Ebay "sold"prices. You will have to know the marque of each i.e.;Ferrari 250 GTO,etc.

Basically whats been said here but remember when thinking about selling in a lot or on eBay the costs and time involved. While eBay can most likely garner more per car than selling in a lot the cost to do so might offset the hassle.

Example: Car A as part of the lot sale brings $15.00, cash done out the door. Same car on eBay might bring $20.00, then if you accept PayPal and add in the fees (which includes a fee on the shipping costs) you have to deduct 13.5% on the total.... ok its only $2.70 right? Still made $2.30 more than the cash sale. But remember you have to take at least one picture, set up the auction on eBay (time)then get a box to ship it in (I only use new but others use used ones) then the packing material (using newspaper isn't advised (expense). Once it sells then you need to pack, print, label and drop off the box for shipping (more time and gas). In the end I would think that cost in time and material is a lot more than the $2.30 cent profit you will make selling it on eBay.

Please don't misunderstand me but if your not used to using eBay some people don't get the cost involved in time and packing products when listing things. Plus you might be able to sell 10-15 that first time out but the others didn't sell so you need to relist and wait..... in some cases it could take a month or more to sell something. Again, cash in hand all at once can sometimes be a better thing.

FYI, I believe that even though the boxes don't add much value here (as said) they are a selling factor. Most diecast people I know would only buy an out of box car as a parts car even if its wrapped in tissue.

Now on the other side (sorry long post) if 1-2-5 of those models being $35-40.00 on eBay than its a home run and selling the others for whatever doesn't matter.

Search each car exactly on eBay under the 1/18 scale, manufacturer and model. mid to lower left on the page will let you select completed listings and sold listings ONLY look at the sold listings. People list models for stupidly high money sometimes (I think to appease the wife about selling the collection though he knows they wont sell) so only sold listings should give you a truer value.

Just my two cents and good luck.

Yes indeed, I would. I never cared much for BBurago, however as was stated some Maisto's are actually pretty nice and have good shelf presence. Both of these manufactures are considered low-end in terms of price, features, and overall quality. Take the dough and have a nice dinner at your favorite local restaurant.
