Carroll Shelby got to race the new updated Maserati Type 61 which had a larger 2.9 liter straight 4 engine. These Birdcage cars were built for privateers as there was no factory team. It took some time before it was ready for the European circuit, but Shelby did have wins in the USAC Road Racing Championship Program sporting his favorite #98.
With that exposed tubular frame and exotic engine set up, you can get lost in the details.
One of only a very few race car models in my collection. The details are outstanding and so are your pictures Rich.
I have that one - wonderful model - as well as the CMC model of one that was driven by Sterling Moss and Dan Gurney
The CMC model is even more detailed but cost considerably more, making the Minichamps car a real bargain and more than enough car to represent the car for the collector who is not a hard core racing fan.
@bob-jackman AHA!!! So you have no will power and can still get sucked in by a beautiful model with numbers on it. I can't tell you how many limits I put on my collection and then violated every one of them.
@franklemire Spoken like a true purist. The real bargain of the Minichamps model is that it comes with Carroll Shelby's hat!
I guess the Minichamps Type 61 was reasonably priced when it first came out, I'll have to do a search to see if they are still out there, but I'm guessing they'll probably command some big bucks now.
