Do you ever meet with other collectors of diecast?

What do you do together? Do you tell non-collectors about your cars? Do you show people that come to your house? I keep my collecting silent, never bring it up, never show anyone because very few people are interested. Half a minute is about all anyone spends with the cars, and that out of politeness.

I've personally met a few D4C members and a few non-members.

Members I've personally met in order are:
Michael Knab
Jay Olins
Bob Mason
The Late Mike Martin
Mark Millar
Bill Bennett
Ken Hargrave
Joe Kelly, Jr.
Tom Ciryak

Bill Bennett and I have been to each other's homes. While he wasn't looking, I snagged a '41 Willys from his collection and replaced it with a photo. To this day, he thinks it looks a little odd but hasn't figure it out yet! :-$

Mark Millar has visited me at my sister's home in Michigan. I gave him a tour of my brother-in-laws collection.

In my business travels, I've met clients that know of the Diecast Zone but are not members. I have one friend who only collects large scale models 1:12 or larger. He considers 1:18 as "those little cars."

Like I'm sure all of us here, rarely does anyone show an interest in my collection. The are horrified when or if I tell them the money I have invested in my collection. I'm sure they think I'm nuts.

Never, not by choice but in the boondocks of N.H. it is tough.

Most members seem to meet in the mid-west or west coast.

Oh and I forgot one more..........

I got to visit up in New Hampshire with one of my oldest diecast friends Rick Field.

Rick along with Ken Botts are really responsible for me getting into this hobby.

A surprisingly large number of people who visit me turn out to be...

...motorsport fans. My collection is mostly racing cars, and a lot of people get to see them as I run an accountancy practice from home, and clients often call round. I never intentionally seek out other collectors, but occasionally our paths cross if they are buying a car from me in person or vice versa, and we spend time talking about models.

I've never met anyone in person from the DZ.

I did meet up with a couple of people that won auctions I had listed for local pickup.

I'm not familiar with any in my area.

I met Rusty Hurley several years ago when he was in the SF Bay Area for business. Did a little diecast talking over dinner at a favorite Italian restaurant. I also met several at a 'lunch on the lawn' during the Monterey Historics a couple of years ago. Not to drop names, but I met Paul Theriot and Mrs., Joe Kelly, Bill Bennett and Kevin Pickle of Scale 18 to name a few. Had a fun time. I met a Bay Area resident collector twice at a local hobby shop but no others, unfortunately

Diecast collection it had to keep mine hidden

Deepens if you got a car guy friend, then it becomes a library that opens many doors and questions. It be hard for me to keep my collection silent because you your walk into the family room and I had a display case you cannot miss. even some of my nurses have commented on my collection and said what a fine hobby.

A few months ago, my wife and I were in Florida visiting her sister. I had contacted Lee Barr and we agreed to meet at his house. Before the scheduled time, we received a call from the hospital that my elderly mother had broken her hip and we had to return to NC immediately. I plan on meeting Tony the next time we go to Florida.

Being a supplier, I myself wish all would talk more about them to others.

Whenever possible I like to meet with other collectors. Usually when on the road vacationing. There are a few of us, Larry and Cliff Read, Kurt Zahn, and Gene Mills that try to get together at the Toledo show when time permits. My last trip I was able to hook up with Marty Johnson, Jay Olins and Michael Knab in Southern Cal. Been to Tony Perrone's home a couple of times in Tenn. Met with the Keystoner's group when they were doing a display change at Hershey, Pa. And stopped to see Kevin Pyle a couple of times when driving through the Columbus, Ohio area. Met a few of the 1:43 crowd in Chicago last year. Dick Browne, John Kuvakas, Dale Dannefer, and Greg Gunn. Jeff Drobot from the Cleveland area. Mat Long and his sister from Acme down in Georgia.

I have met many of our fellow collectors through my travels across the country and have displayed portions of our collection for special events. Since our collection also consists of airplanes, tanks, trucks and miniature movie props and sets including the plastic players......there generally is something that will interest our visitors.

The most asked about however are the 1/18 warbirds.....they draw the most attention followed by SunStars and Highway 61 1950's cars. However, our car collection is so eclectic there is an era for all age groups to enjoy.
