Doug Nash Bronco Buster Funny Car - Part 6
The original vehicle had a tilt body that enabled entry into the cockpit and to work on the engine. To duplicate that look, I had to cut the body into two pieces.
I conferred and bounced possible solutions of how to handle the cuts with my customizing guru, Chris Moroni. Talking with Chris is like tapping into an encyclopedia of knowledge. After considering many options and ideas, using a solution Chris offered, it was on to the task of cutting the rest of the panels.
As luck would have it, the door panel seam where the vertical cut would be is the thickest body panel. On the inside, there is an extra thick "boss" that I suppose added body rigidity but also served as a mounting post to the chassis. It's about 1/2 inch thick, and as Chris suggested to enable easier cutting, I ground down about 3/8 inch of metal on the inside of the body. The photos will show a "before and after" with one side ground off and the other side still to be done.
The Dremel always removes a lot of metal material. That will cause enormous out of scale seam gaps would change the look and the dimensions of the model. To fix that, I glued in plastic pieces that would build up and replace the loss metal due to cutting. Those will be filed, sanded, and apply spot putty so the body seams will line up correctly. Now that the body has been cut, and the dimensions correct again, I can begin building the chassis.

Looking good. This is going to be awesome.
Nicely done Marlowe! With alot of hard work you "cut" your way out of a tricky situation.
