Ertl American Muscle/Auto World 1957 Chrysler 300C - Popular Mechanics, gunmetal gray

I just added this beautiful car to my collection, but I have a question. Nowhere, neither on the car, the box, nor online, can I find any reference to it being a limited edition.
However, it appears to be. Mine has "0578" stamped underneath on the gas tank. Does that number refer to something else?
My main question is in 2 parts: is this truly a limited edition, and if so, does anyone know how many were produced? Can anyone enlighten me?! Thanks in advance!

(PICS) Hi Harry, GREAT replica, good question. About the model...The more you look at that one the..

...better you will feel. Your 1/18 1957 Chrysler is loaded with accurate detail and up-scale features including hanging ignition keys and those beautifully designed tiny spring-loaded door jam pins that WILL keep the doors closed.

That model's proportions were tooled up nicely and it's in scale. The trunk interior/mats should be gray & black (not just all black) and the centers of those wheelcovers should be red but that's an easy fix that took me about 15 minutes years ago.

About the limited edition status... The short answer is, "It means nothing." That is to say, YES the model is a numbered edition produced in limited (or specific) quantities but...BUT... Ertl (Precision 100) and subsequently Autoworld have since manufactured so many that the once "limited edition status" has now become diluted to "meaningless status."

Basically it boils down to the old adage, "If they're ALL special then none of them are special." Make sense?

Still though, don't let ANY of this bother you Harry. It's a fantastic 1/18 replica by any measure, "limited" or not.

In essence, it's limited to whatever they can sell....

Production runs can be anywhere from 2000 to 5000 units. When sales begin to flag, they cancel the next run. How many runs were commissioned and what the run size was... who knows.
Also, the tooling was resold and put back into production under a new branding.
That said, it a great model.

Thanks, guys!

I appreciate all your feedback. It is an incredible model!
You know that experience of ordering a diecast and when you get it, it just isn't quite as nice as you thought it would be?
Well, this was just the opposite. I kept drooling over this one whenever I'd see it in a catalog or online. Finally I decided to treat myself and when I got it, it was far better than I had expected! I could have drooled a lot more! LOL!
If anyone out there is tempted to invest in this one, I say you can't go wrong. Great companion to the BoS 1957 Imperial.
