Honoring Germany's greatest public works project of the '30s, Mercedes Benz built four of this 1938 540K Autobahn-Kurier 2 seat fastback. Using the name "Kurier" certainly didn't mean it was built to deliver pizzas while still hot. It was commissioned for the elites. After seeing its twin at the Paris Auto Show, particular car was commissioned by a Spanish doctor from Barcelona who, upon delivery, took his wife for a grand tour of Europe and North Africa. The car stayed in the doctor's family until 2003 when it was sold to an American collector who had it restored to Concours level winning numerous prestigious 'Best Of Shows' over the years. This model is so black it's like photographing a black hole. It absorbs all lighting sources, returning nothing to the camera.

Beautiful pictures and writeup. Who made the model?

Beautiful piece of German pre-war (just barely  🙄) automotive history.  I do not, however, understand those wheels. They are replicated wonderfully of course, but are those seven chrome "tips"  between the spokes simply art-deco or do they have a function?
