The Gumbert Apollo S was probably made known to a few in the US when, in 2008, the Stig drove it to a track lap record of 1.17.1 on the 11th season of Top Gear. The record time held up for two years until it was edged out by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. It was a creation of Albert Gumbert and Audi who provided the engine and their expertise with the proviso that the result would be a marketable car rather than a prototype. The design of the car would make it possible for the car to drive upside down in a tunnel once it reached the speed of 120mph. Its Audi 4.2 l bi-turbo intercooled V8 would provide anywhere from the base Apollo generating 641 bhp, the "S" version at 690 bhp to the race version at 789 bhp which gave it a lap time of 7.11.57 at the Nurburgring.I don't have production numbers for the Apollo, but production ceased in 2013 when Gumbert declared bankruptcy.
Nicely executed model & impressive 1:1...I just couldn't get into the styling of it.
Once you consider this car could drive upside down through tunnels, suddenly all that quirky external styling makes perfect sense. This is quite a fascinating model.
I'm usually an adherent to the design philosophy of "Form follows function." However, despite the prodigious performance envelope of this car it seems the design philosophy here is "Butt-Ugly follows function." I'm sure the wholly unappealing looks of the car contributed to its financial failure.
