This 1933 Rolls Royce Phantom ll rolling chassis cost £2450 or roughly £230,000 today which equals $309,450. Who the hell had that kind of money back then. Not many, I'm thinkin'. This rather whimsical Boat Tail Tourer was originally given a 5 seat Sport Saloon body by Barker of London as sold to an unidentified really rich English gentleman. The car reappeared in British East Africa owned by the Kenya Tea Company. There must have been some story there. They had the old coachwork replaced by a local boatbuilder into this skiff design by Hooper of London from teak wood probably from Thailand. Back then, the Thai government allowed wholesale cutting of their teak forests. Today, with a measured ban on logging, the teak alone is worth a fortune. In 1999, the car was acquired and is now displayed at the Technik Museum Sinsheim in Germany. I get a kick out of the spare tire dressed as a life preserver.
Gorgeous car and photos, Rich. I'm going to take some photos from my 1/43 collection that will be a series I will call Cars of the Obscenely Rich. This vehicle fits into that category.
Goofy & cool, something only a "wallet" could buy back in the day; I love this model and doubt it could be photographed any better! Notice how I refrain from referring to your images as "pics?" All of us "post pics," you're doing something different.
