Is the General Lee now something you should hide away?
With all the hoopla lately, and political correctness (excessive or not) -
Should these be boxed up and put away?
Will they get banned from ebay, Amazon, etc?
Ron......
The General Lee now carries the same connotation as a Nazi staff car or a Japanese WWII bomber plane. Sure, it's OK to display such "historical models" but one should always be on guard for frank discussions about mankind's lack of humanity and empathy.
This model (now) represents a bygone era that once tolerated displays that have since become politically incorrect. No harm in owning them, regardless of your personal attitudes and beliefs so long as your "displays" don't publically affect (offend) others.
Will the value of these models rise? I doubt it. The sudden "boom" or spike in pricing in the secondary markets, I believe, has run it's course.
Save your General Lee model Ron. As they stated when Abraham Lincoln passed away......... "it (he) now belongs to the ages."
in 20 years this stuff will come back as highly collectible kitsch and the ones that will be buying them up are the ones that were so deeply offended and outraged in the day. It's all ready happened with similar genre.
Speaking for me, I highly doubt it.

RLS1346 AT aol DOT com. I just want to go off the board on this.
Of course you should not hide it away ! The politically correct people who insist you should are fools who actually tend to know quite a bit LESS about history than they think they do.

Today .. I can not answer this question for fear that .... never mind !!!!!!!
It's a personal decision...
The issue of flying the flag as a state, representing the people of that state is totally different then having something in a personal collection that's an artifact of an era in pop art.
If by displaying the car someone thinks they are acting in defiance, well that is going to be offensive to a lot of people. It is also a very silly way to act out defiance...sort of like a kid when I didn't like what was served for dinner and refused to eat. Didn't accomplish much since I just went hungry.
If you are curious, yes, I've ordered one of the last batch with flags on the roof. Not because I am from the south (I am) or that I believe in freedom of expression (which I do) but because I collect TV & Movie cars, and orange cars., I don't have an example of one yet because I thought it was something I would just pick-up sometime as there always seem to be hundreds of them on the market.
Once I get it, I might change my mind about keeping it or displaying it. Ain't America great....
Nice post Rusty! I like what you've said and the way you said it!
