British-German engineer and test driver Rudolf Uhlenhaut. For all his experience with designing , building and test driving some of the greatest cars ever made, until his death in 1989, he never owned a car. After the 1955 Le Mans disaster with Mercedes pulling out of racing, old Rudolf's commuting troubles were solved. He took a gull wing 300SLR Coupe, turned it street legal, slapped muffler on those huge exhaust pipes and he no longer needed an Uber account. The man had more test track hours than Rudolf Caracciola. It is said his commute from Munich to Stuttgart (137 mi) took a little more than an hour. here's CMC's "Uhlenhaut Coupe">
For the first time, I just realized that the color of the interior of the "muffled" version of the 300SLR is different from the "unmuffled" car.
Superb photography Richard; arguably, among the top five (if not #1 ) replicated 1/18 scale mufflers, right? This gullwing is an incredible CMC effort that never fails to impress.
Marty - Those interior color choices make perfect sense to me: Red = hot, loud & noisy! 🤪 😲 Blue = calm, quiet, serene. 🤗 😉
I have the unmuffled version. A model that draws lots of attention in my collection.
Great article and pictures of my favourite Mercedes. I was surprised by the different interiors for muffled and unmuffled.
Absolutely gorgeous sports car.......sans the hideous muffler of course.
@chris While the muffler might be correct, it's the reason that I bought the unmuffled version.
