Maisto Volkswagon Beetle 1951
Hello everyone. I wonder if someone could describe the doors of the Maisto VW Beetle 1951. I have a thing about door hinges. There are some models with neat hinges that appear to operate like real car door, ie. the hinge edge of the door panel stuffs neatly inside the back of front quarter panel. There are other models which have hinges that allows the entire door to glide "away" from the car body - I think some refer to this as "dog leg hinge". Hard to explain but when doors separate from the car, it looks so much like a toy.
I saw a green one at the mall yesterday. Price was reasonable but the box was taped up. If anyone owns this, I would love to hear about the doors in detail.
Another online store has a yellow 1955 BBurago Beetle that looks similar but again, I have no idea how the doors operate. And the Bburago cost more. Search the internet for some pictures with open doors... cant find any.
Thanks guys.
The Maisto and Bburago Beetles have both been around for several years. Both have the "dogleg" hinges, which were the industry standard at the time. I don't think anyone makes a 'Classic" Beetle with realistic door hinges. BTW The Bburago is over scale, about 1/16th, while the Maisto is closer to 1/18th. If you want to send me an e-mail at tmj4004@aol.com, I will take a couple of pictures of my Beetles (I have both) and sent them to you.
Beetle pictures will be great
Thanks Tom. I have sent you an email. Would be glad to receive those pictures from you.
SJ, I have some VW pictures I took some time ago. (PICTURES)
You can find these at SAMS, COSCO, BJ's and other stores for $9.98 so they're cheap enough to buy both.

Thanks for the Beetle pictures
Thank you so much Dan... beautiful. The engine bay of the Yat Ming appears to show more while the Maisto looks pretty empty... the mall I went only had Maisto. I think I could work on the engine detail later on. The split windows and the green color really brings out the classic look. Hope I could find time to get it before Christmas... if there's parking. Thanks buddy... I saved the pix.
SJ, if you like the split window type by all means get it. I've owned several VW's and my '57 had the split window.
These cars are relatively cheap at $9.99 so don't worry about making a choice...I'd just get both.
I actually owned a red '67 so I like that one. Mine had a sticker on the drivers door that had the letters 12V on a white sticker because VW went to a 12 volt electrical system mid-year.
My brother and I reworked the engine with 1600cc jugs and other goodies and it would almost break the front tires loose when taking off. Sure was fun racing other foreign cars.

Wow Dan... you got the real stuff in your garage! Was this how you started your collection? For me, the Bufori MKII I rented for my wedding got me stuck on classic cars... even thought about buying a red 1963 MGB convertible... fairly well maintained.. some mild work... but reasonable price... a dream that could be realised... but wife is showing odd expressions... and local banks dont provide financing. Better stick with models... no workshop visits... ๐
