PIC (1:1) Turbine Trivia.....

The 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car was designed under the direction of Elwood Engel, who had worked for Ford immediately before his move to Chrysler. He used many older Ford styling themes on the project the most obvious being the dramatic rear taillight / bumper assembly. It very closely resembled a 1958 Ford styling study called the "La Galaxie"....

This also might account for the Turbine Car's strong similarity to the '61 T'bird.

Elwood Engel also influenced the design of the '61 Lincoln and Thunderbird.

As you said, the Thunderbird can actually be seen in the Chrysler Turbine car.

The numbers

Of the 55 Turbines that Chrysler produced, none were sold to the public, and all but nine were destroyed when the experiment ended.

A collector in Indiana owns one. Museums have five. Chrysler had three -- and now one of those three is Jay Leno's - lucky boy!

I read somewhere that Chrysler destroyed them rather than pay some import 'tax' levied on them by U.S. Customs?

Steve, I think it was more a matter of Chrysler not wanting to sell prototypes to the public.

along the top fender line and around the wheel arches leads right back to the '61 Continental....

Man how sad is that end of a beautiful car.

I have never seen this but a very sad ending for sure. Makes a grown man want to cry.
