(Pics) 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer

This is SunStar's terrific hardtop edition of the spectacular Dodge Custom Royal Lancer for 1959. This beautifully finned giant of an automobile is captured in all it's stylish glory with this astoundingly cool Platinum Series release. More versions of this one are on the way and any of them are well worth picking up.

Great pics Mike, too good infact. They really highlight all of this model's shortcomings.

Good photos of what can only be considered a design nightmare.

I always thought it was UGLY also.

However I think the '57 & '58 are much nicer looking.

I agree the pecking order is '57, '58 and lastly 1959 but still I think they're well styled.....

...and far from ugly. Just one man's opinion. Do I wish Sun Star had done a 1957 instead of the '59? You BETCHA!

But I think ALL OF US AGREE that Sun Star really BOTCHED their tooling of this model; what a shame!

Well, no,I can certainly say that I and many others do NOT agree that SunStar badly "botched" this diecast. While there is no such thing (and never will be), a "perfect" replica (whether an expensive CMC or inexpensive Bburago) I happily have two of these extremely enjoyable and cool '59 Dodge diecasts models.

Excellent ! That forthcoming two-tone green version should be a treat.

I always thought the design was awkward. The SS tooling adds more awkwardness.

Sadly Robert, you're 100% correct. Sun Star botched it.

Having never seen nor read any reviews of this particular Sun Star model and initially seeing Mike's very nicely done photographs, my first thought was the windshield looks "off". Other aspects of the car didn't necessarily strike me as odd or unusual, but the windshield kept coming back to bother me. If I were to advise Sun Star, I would say congrats on making this interesting image but do not make obvious and inexcusable design mistakes.

Bob...............

...the "tucked in" fins (they should flair out from the body), droopy fenders and odd roof are also problems inherent to this model.

We "all" had discussions about these issues when the convertible appeared 15 months ago.

The bottom line: Sun Star screwed it up but it is a 1/18 1959 Dodge and a must have for "Forward Look" collectors.
Too bad they couldn't have done better.
