(PICs) '58 Plymouth Fury by Motormax with mods.

One of my favourite cars of all time, but one that took me a while to actually get. Not made easier by the lack of offerings of Furies in the proper colour. The Motormax car certainly had plenty of issues, but I saw many of them the kind that could be corrected, so it was worth buying for the relatively modest price.

The body dimensions are pretty spot on and the overall impression is quite impressive. One of the best features is the side trim that is perfectly straight, a vitally important aspect to get right, which for some reason many others seem to struggle with. Other than that, the fit of some of the separate bits of bright work isn't always the greatest and the paint quality is quite lacklustre, but none of this is distracting either, particularly from a distance.

The interior is a bit stripped down, but actually quite accurate outside of missing the fabric on the seats unique to the Fury. For some reason to the speedometer is the wrong way around. Not the numbers, but the direction the scale arcs. Weird mistake.

The engine bay needed a bit of work. The air cleaners and cylinder heads were originally coloured this horrible yellow reminiscent of Lego bricks. Had to paint those with proper gold. I also enlivened the space a bit by buying a really cheap set of earbuds and cutting those to pieces, using a photo to help in getting some of the bigger hoses in their right places.

The trunk looked so plastic, so I added a little custom carpet there. Not very accurate, but it serves its purpose.

When I received the model, the big issue was that it was entirely missing the chrome bit under the hood. So instead of having to deal with international reclamations, I decided to see if I could do something about this, so I dug around the junkyard of my modelling days and happened to find a chrome plated piece of some sort that was the appropriate size. While missing the proper shape, it still fit pretty well, so that was a suitable fix.

And the hood emblem, which was attached to that missing piece, I scrounged up from the much maligned Ertl/AMT 1:25 model kit I had laying around. It's not up-to-scale, but it comes close to fooling the eye.

The grille was just a big, bright gold affair, really toy-like. So that had to be detailed and looks much better now. Also, those ornaments over the front fenders were too high, so I tried trimming them down a bit - to not the best of finished results, admittedly. I'd love to replace the side view mirrors with something more detailed than the shapless blobs they are, but adding some black helped to give them a bit more illusion of depth at least.

The reverse light on the rear bumper was made into a break light for some reason, but that was easy to sort out. I also added a bit of black to the Fury badges in the rear as is correct.

Overall, this is a good model to take on as a project, not really to enjoy as it comes straight out of the box. There's things I didn't bother to get down to, but I'm largely quite happy with what I managed to coax out of this with my limited skills. The side trim, the proper colour, and general detailing certainly were enough to sell this to me. And it's certainly cheap enough to play around with.

A terrific '58 Plymouth ! The improvements add very nicely to an already solid model. I have the same MotorMax Fury and it displays and photographs really well.
