Very nice .... both of them ! Somehow, I don't think those are "grocery-getters' or, if they are, you get the groceries very, very fast !
@john3976 GM made numerous mistakes throughout the decades staring in the 1970's but killing off Pontiac had little to do with the brand getting "lost in the suace" and left to die.
The "great recession" of 2008-2010 was the chief cause. Suddenly, GM had to quickly streamline operations to stop hemorrhaging money. Many brands were sold off, others trimmed considerably but in order to secure billions in US government loans, GM had to become leaner still. Many attempts were made to save Pontiac, several radical possibilities were considered including cutting the brand down to just one or two vehicles.
In the end, however, it was all for not. Reluctantly, GM had to extinguish Pontiac to secure loans to, in turn, save GM.
@chris GM had let Pontiac stagnate before the problems of 2008 - 2010, their line up of cars was anemic at best, nothing to draw in customers, GM had ended the Pontiac GTO after the 2006 model year leaving Pontiac with no "muscle car" in their line up. As it was the GTO while the performance specs where great the styling was boring, in fact the GTO was merely a rebadged Holden Monaro, an Australian coupe that was based on the European Opel Omega B, which had actually been sold in the U.S. as the Cadillac Catera from 1997 to 2001.
With the end of the Firebird in 2002, the 2006 GTO was the last muscle car Pontiac ever produced (imported?). The worst part is that despite its awful aesthetics and Australian origins, with its Corvette C6 powertrain the GTO easily outperformed its Neo-muscle competitors, the Charger, Mustang, Camaro and even the Challenger.
Pontiacs problems were going on long before the 2008 - 2010 financial crisis happened.
The Obama administration is the one who required GM to shutter both Pontiac and Saturn and also was involved with selecting their current CEO who has made one mistake after the next since her appointment as CEO.
I really can't argue with most of that other than to reiterate that GM tried like hell to save Pontiac, but the problems/mistakes GM had with Pontiac were not exclusive. GM screwed up all their others brands too. As I noted, GM made MANY, MANY mistakes long before 2008.
Had the "GR of 08-10" not occurred GM would've continued the PMD (or at least pro-longed its death ).
With regard to the Obama administration, yes, naturally, they made demands of GM ...b e c a u s e... when you take someone's money (billions from the US gov. ) you have to take their sh**.
Of course, GM (being as messed up as it was ) had to file for BK anyway but emerged healthier and for a short time was number 1 in the world.
Sadly, GM will never again be what it once was. Just why that is.... is another story for another time (and another forum ).
Extremely nice Dodge Challenger ! I also have a couple of the H61 '70 Challengers and they are really exceptional diecasts and cars.
Right, right... I remember these HW61 WIX 2-car sets..... the other (1/18 ) car was a contemporary Dodge Challenger, but you mean HW61 never produced a 1/18 1970 Challenger in blue?
@chris...they may have, I honestly don't know. I know the B5 Blue used on the 1:18 2009 Challenger was exclusive to this set. I figured the same for the 1:24.
