GM Divisions concept cars for 1954 all seemed to be variants of the fiberglass bodied '53 Corvette. My favorite of the group that I have yet to see a model of is the '54 Olds F-88 with its beautiful, conservative lines, it seems so ready for production.
On the other hand, Buick's Wildcat ll styling seems to have gone off the rails in two different directions. Evoking the looks of an early '30s speedster, it has flying winged front fenders with biplane bumpers, chromed wire wheels and free standing headlamps. Now add "Dagmar" bumper guards to the mix with a sprinkling of jet age futurism all around and you have this vehicle. It's a runnable car, powered by a 322 cid 220 hp V8, done in case GM Chief Harlow Curtis wanted the car after it made the auto show circuit for that year. There few styling cues that made it into Buick production cars. All I can see is the free standing headlamps may have inspired the 1961 Chrysler Imperial.
Ha! These model concept cars remind me of something that happened many years ago on the old D4C. I was fooling around with Photoshop and decided to make changes to this bugeye Biscayne concept car. Some might recognize GM designer Chuck Jordan in the photo.
I didn't know it at the time, but the man looking in the car was a D4C member! I don't remember his name but it truly IS a small world!
I like the improvement!
