The 3rd generation of Auto Union race cars, the 1936 Type D was developed by (who else?) Ferdinand Porsche. Powered by a supercharged 520 hp mid mounted 6.0 l V16. The aluminum body over steel tubed frame weighed only 1700 lbs and few drivers (notably Bernd Rosemeyer) could handle that bucking bronco. This configuration gave the Type an astonishing 195 mph top end. Finding the car's rear tires difficult to keep grounded, a special 'dually' variant was built for hill climbing events... the Bergrenner or mountain racer. These Type Cs were soon superseded by the Type D in 1939 and the remaining Type Cs were shipped to and stored at their Zwickau factory all through the wars years. Unfortunately, none seem to exist today as they were confiscated by the Soviets as war reparations and from there, their fate is unknown. If they still existed, it would probably be known at least after the fall of the USSR.
This CMC model with well over 1000 parts is quite the museum piece.
With Bernd Rosemeyer:
Beautiful CMC model. Nice post. It is a real shame that the original cars no longer appear to exist.
I saw one of these on eBay with the numbers. It appears to be sealed. Do you know if CMC did a sealed version?
Remarkable in every respect Rich, 520hp in 1936 is amazing! Outstanding pics.
According to ultimatecarpage.com, "Of all the Type Cs constructed, one is believed to have survived. This one was discovered in Eastern Germany without a body and several other key components. With the help of experts like Crostwaithe & Gardiner and master coachbuilder Rod Jolley, this car was brought back to running order in the early eighties. It now resides in the German Museum in Munich. With the expertise gathered from reconstructing the 'original' survivor, the team constructed several replicas for Audi."
The same article shows photos of "Chassis 14R" running at Goodwood (driven by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd) and another car at a Monaco Historic Grand Prix.
Very cool, Paul. Thanx.
@marty-johnson I doubt it. If they did, it would sure be a first. There are two Type Cs on their German website: the #18 Bernd Rosemeyer and an un-numbered and both are full functioned.
@rich-sufficool - Yes, it would seem unlikely to me as well. I'm gonna pull the trigger because the cost is reasonable. Thanks for your help!
A beautiful model in the traditional CMC detail.
