Smokey Yunick 1962 Watson Roadster, first indy car to run a wing. The wing was only ran in practice because while it increased the corner speeds to 146 MPH the drag of the wing on the straights kept the car at 146 MPH. Smokey felt the wing put too much strain on the 4 cylinder offenhauser engine and did not think it would last the entire race. The wing was banned after the race as well. Bruce Crower of Crower Performance fame assisted Smokey Yunick with the creation of the wing and helped get the wing built.
This car is actually the 1960 Watson Roadster that won the 1960 Indy 500 with Smokey Yunick was the crew chief of the car. Smokey got cheated out of being listed as the crew chief on the 1960 car and Chicky Hiroshima took the credit, Chicky was always down in Watsons garage and every time Smokey would come up with an idea that improved the car Watson suddenly had the same things on his car, from changing from a 3 inch hose to refuel to a four inch hose, and adding a set of air jacks to the car for pit stops. Chicky was telling Watson everything Smokey was doing.
This is from Smokeys Book Ll'l Skinny Rule Book: Note: six or seven years ago Jack Martin, an Indy official and PR expert, then running the Indy car museum, polled all the living members of the pit crew. All but one said same as what I've told you. All but one...the driver. Had Rathman agreed with the others, the speedway was gonna correct the official records. Now, so you kinda see why I think Rathman is a p&!@k?
Based on your photo presentation, I just purchased this model on eBay. Thanks for posting!
