There is a book written by the person who took the team photos for Shelby, he is pretty clear this car was in fact destroyed because Shelby was not going to pay the customs duty owed on it if it stayed in America. McLaren had no success when he had the car so he would not have wanted it back. I would have to search for the book but I will go with the car was in fact cut up and destroyed. 

@john3976 You do realize that my two 'hidden history' stories were made up. I just invented those stories as an excuse to model two additional roadsters for my collection. I have similar stories for a number of my 'alternate universe' cars like this Chaparral Corvette
