The new 1963 Corvette Stingray Z06 was finally a Corvette that made Zora Arkus-Duntov proud with its 360 hp fuel injected 327, but he had designs on the GT class of the 1963 Le Mans race. So he built 5 Grand Sport lightweight race cars with a 377 cid small block good for 550 hp with all the chassis and braking upgrades for the competition. 125 units were planned for homologation purposes, but the GM decided to honor the AMA racing ban and the prolect ended. Arkus-Duntov allowed these cars to get into the hands of privateers like Penski, A.J. Foyt, Dick Thompson and Jim Hall. Before that happened, GM pulled the 377 engine so most were run with the heavier big block 427. Between the years of 1963 and 1964 they achieved some successes especially against the Cobra. The last success was by Roger Penski winning the 1964 Nassau Trophy Cup.
This model by Exoto is 23 years old and originally sold for under $100 and it's still a beauty. This particular model represents Don Yenko's entry in the 1964 Augusta USRRC race. I have a few of the GS Vettes in coupe and roadster form. I actually bought this model because I thought the hood scoops were just nasty looking! These models had mind-blowing detail for their time.
It's a killer 1/18th model of this Vette ! Very nice Exoto.
