I quite liked the Holden based GTO seen in North America and was very surprised when sales lagged. I did note that it really mattered what color a person bought; certain colors could make it look a bit plain.

As noted, aside from the hood scoops and Pontiac trademark twin grill - there was little else that looked American nor GTO-ish. Nothing about the design language suggested this was a modern take of a once formidable (and quite seminal ) rolling American cultural icon. Because of that, its fate was sealed.
I actually like the Monaro based GTO. It didn't have the retro look I believe the consumer was looking for, but still a nice looking car for the era. No worse looking than a BMW or Mercedes coupe of the same vintage. Smooth, clean and fast.😊
