Built on a Nash Metropolitan chassis, The 1956 Astra-Gnome was commissioned by AMC, designed by Richard Arbib and built by Andrew Mazzara as a vision of the automobile in the year 2000. Like a Swatch, the aluminum panels could be substituted for multiple colors. It was powered by the Metropolitan's 55HP 1.5 liter flat head 4 cylinder with a top speed of 80 mph. As concepts go, the flip up bubble top in 1956 was the essence of futurism. I would kill for a 1/18 model of this car, which now resides in the Petersen Museum.

And I suppose the lid on it is the Astra Dome. ®

A very cool looking automobile and certainly pretty unique to see on the road. I think I would probably like driving around in this spaceship IC vehicle rather than an electric cybertruck, lol !

Pretty wild for a 2000. 😬 😬  I see alot of Buick Riviera  in that front end...   Hard to believe underneath lies this thing! 😯

OMG, 8 hours later......   I just realized, THAT'S NOT a model; that's the real thing!  🙄 🙄 😯 😯
