Bill Mitchell's 1959 XP-87 Stingray was built from a sketch by Peter Brock and refined by Larry Shinoda. It was powered by the 283 fuel injected V8 and originally set up for racing, despite GM's adherence to the AMA ban on factory racing. The car was raced privately, but GM put a stop to that and Mitchell later added a second seat and converted it to street legal. The design was carried forward to the 1961 Mako Shark concept, the later C-1s and ultimately to the C-2 Sting Ray.
