The Ford / Shelby collaboration to win international honors (read: European) began with melding the Peter Brock designed aerodynamic "Daytona" body to their Cobra roadster. The Shelby American Race Team would field these new coupes, but only on this side of the pond. The British part time driver and race team manager, Alan Mann, would be responsible for their European races. His connection to Ford was due to his team's success racing Cortinas, Zephyrs and Anglias (and later Escorts and Falcons) in the early '60s becoming a quasi-Ford factory team. In 1964, on the recommendation of John Holman of Holman-Moody, Alan Mann Racing Ltd of Byfleet, England became an official Ford Factory Team. In 1965, with their successes on the major European circuit, Alan Mann's prepped Cobra Daytonas clinched the World Sportscar Championship and was the first American team to do so making Mr. Ford very happy. Until 1969, Mann's team had many successful runs with the later GT40s employing such notable drivers as Graham Hill and Jacky Stewart. Fun Facts: The team worked with Steve McQueen on two of his racing films, "Goldfinger", and built the movie car for "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang along with other custom movie cars.

@mikedetorrice Yes. I have one...but it's packed away at a friend's house. Rich's excellent history/pics reminds me that I WANT MINE BACK! LoL 😪

I'm glad I still have this Exoto Daytona.
I only have one other Exoto Cobra left. The 289 in burgundy / gold stripes.

I've got a few 289 Cobras too..... Ever check the trunk?
Years ago, I realized Exoto "CHUMPED US!" Their spare wheel is DOWNSIZED to fit the trunk-well. Instead of "tooling" the proper size spare wheel-trunk-well, Exoto simply put that spoked rim on a SMALLER tire. Exoto "CHUMPED US!" 😠 😠 😠 Carol's mad too!

Great history again, Rich...thanks. Love the model, too. I never grabbed the Exoto, but the Shelby Collectibles version is pretty good for the price.

@chris In total, I have 92 Exoto models - but seeing as they still owe me for two cars I pre-paid for I think they have chosen to forget me.
