I'da settled for a Mach 1, an SS Chevelle, GTO.... ANYTHING but mom's "family vacation" station wagon 🙄

Oh well, it had fold down back seats so I was popular for Friday night double dates to the drive-in.

I graduated in 1970 as well John.  Oh how the world has changed in these last 51 years.  Obviously lots of progress for the good, but certainly much not so good as well.

I never had the luxury of having a car given to me as I always had to buy my own starting with a 1937 Studebaker Dictator sedan which I paid $25 for when I was 13. When I graduated  in 1958 I owned a 1950 Mercury coupe that I paid $600 when I was 16.

Edit here. I did pay $200 for the Ford. Got it at 16 when I got my D.L. Not the best car but due to all the issues I had with it I became a proficient self-taught mechanic.

I suppose it was a "luxury" but it didn't seem like it at the time. I had to share that old station wagon with my older sister and all of my friends had cool cars. The Dodge conked out before my younger brother got his license or we'd have had to share it 3 ways. It was more of a luxury for my parents than for us because we were all involved in various activities. That's the only car that was ever "given" to me. After age 16, I always had a job. I got a $2500 loan and bought a new '72 Vega. I made the payments, insurance, gas, etc. from a delivery job and playing in bands while I attended college.
