A "CARE" QUESTION...

On another thread, member Al Dorado mentioned that his '53 Buick Skylark (Reef Blue) has shown signs of cracking paint on the front and rear fenders.  Upon reading his comment, I checked my own model and thankfully she's as pristine as when new in 1993.  

But got me to thinking.  We've all had cars that have shown some cracking or blemishes, and even worse the dreaded Cancer rot.  So my question with regard the cracking paint and blemishes, what are some thoughts on why or how this happens?  

Could it be how the cars are stored?  Or how about displayed?  Are they in bright rooms and possible exposure to sun light?  

I keep each car in my collection in its own individual plastic display case.  The cases are stackable and I keep the room them are in DARK at all times.  The blinds in the room are always closed and I cover the rows of cars with towels when possible sunlight is coming in.  Not saying this prevents cracking paint or rash, but I like to think I'm doing my best to preserve the cars as best I can.  

So guys, what are your thoughts and secrets?  Or is the cracking and rash something that just happens to some cars, while not affecting others?  With investment we all have in these little collectibles, keeping them perfect is important to all of us.

Someone posted here recently, in answer to a similar question - but that of chrome trim coming off - that different materials' expansion rates can cause the trim problem.  Perhaps metal expanding under paint can cause problems?  When you're dealing with 1/24 the surfaces are greater.
