The early Fox-bodied Mustangs ( the Mustang ll) were the least desirable of the many generations. Saddled with primitive emission equipment, down-sized engine and new safety regulations, it was a joke compared to prior iterations. Ford was trying to get consumers excited about their 2.3 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine. Ford teamed up with McLaren to hand build these engines. use their off the shelf performance parts and package it in a race worthy platform. 249 of these M-81 Mustangs were planned, but poor sales and high cost ($20,000) scuttled the project and only 10 were built and 7 were swathed in McLaren's Bitter Orange paint scheme. In essence, this car is the rarest production Mustang.
This was an ancient Bburago diecast kit from back in the day when the paint would fall off the model before you finish building it (I repainted it the original gold color and in the pre-computer days, I really had no research on the actual car. All I knew was that those sure weren't BBS wheels on it. I just bought the kit because it looked unusual and kinda quirky.
An ugly but interesting Mustang. Thanks for the history and images of your modifications, Rich.
