In those early days, Danbury Mint models lacked the quality and parts count of its rival. They made a bunch of 'me too' models that were priced $10 less. Examples include the Stutz Blackhawk and the Jaguar XK120 roadster. With the success of FM's Rolls Royce line up, they released their 1938 Rolls Royce Phantom lll Sedanca de Ville in a Garnet finish. The castings lacked crispness for all the molded in parts including the side trim that was just painted silver. They did do a nice job on the grill, hood ornament and light groups. There is leather upholstery for the the chauffeur's bench seat and a velour-like upholstery for the passenger seat. They did an attempt to create a 3-D dash when FM was using a simple applique but it mostly consisted of blobs. Many years later it was re-released in a tutone green which I found quite appealing. All in all, it's OK enough to sit in my line up of vintage Rolls and it's a testament to how Danbury Mint really upped its over the years from this humble beginning.
Those front end closeups are superb Rich. An essential buy for me when I discovered DM via Roy Rauch and ebay in the early 2000s. Cant recall seeing the green one. If anyone has one it would be great to see some pics.
@geoff-jowett I agree with your comments Geoff. I too would like to see the green one as I didn't know it existed. Excellent writeup Rich and very factual regarding the model itself.
