1st a few thoughts as I reflect on the past and future of my collection.

As I enter a new year, I'm looking at my models in a different light. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that I have basically put this model scale on a back burner. I haven't really put much new into my 1:24 scale models for the last couple of years, and to be honest, I probably won't going forward either. My focus for the last several years has been 1:43 and as that collection grows, it's where my passion lies.

With that, I will never leave this scale totally behind, but as I continue to set up my new model room, it has become painfully clear I just don't have the space for everything. The other side of this is of course, time. With my daughter's help, we've made arrangements for the care of my collection when I'm gone. She and my grandson are going to keep it intact and as I work the space in my home, we are going to mirror it in hers (or at least a setup in the future) That means, my model room will need to fit into her space as well.

I am thrilled that my collection will continue to exist in the future (at least a manageable portion of it) but that means I will need to slim it down some. As this year unfolds, I will look at new acquisitions and how they fit into the whole display. I will review what I have and look at one I "need to keep", the rest will go to new homes. That process will include all scales in my collection.

So, while I haven't started the "paring down" project just yet, I hope to get started soon. Isn't it always better to be trimmer and slimmer in all things?

For today, here's a favorite of mine in a couple different setups that I've done over the last couple of years. This one is a keeper.

Nice looking Olds John; the colors suit it so well!  Good luck with paring down the collection......expect separation anxiety.

@jack-dodds

I think I am. I've been preparing for some time now. A few years ago, I tried to do this same thing, within a few years, I'd bought all but one of them back. So, my 1st attempt didn't work, I hope to be better this time.

@jcarnutz It's great that you have a child who takes such an interest in our hobby; I've come to understand such a thing is rare.

Good luck with your paring down plan John.  You're braver and probably smarter than I am.  I'm going to continue to enjoy every car on my shelves until the day I'm (hopefully) called to the Lord's table.

The discussions here on the Forum's many times over the years have been about what happens to our collections when we've left the planet.  I'm comfortable with being to enjoy my collection while I'm here, and then when I'm gone, my girls and wife can do what they choose to with the cars.

So getting rid of any of them is not even a remote thought of mine.  I'm proud to say that since I began collecting these little models back in October 1989, I've never sold or got rid of a single one.  They've never been an investment (as I know some people think of them as), only something that makes me happy.  There is no value I can put on that.

@georgeschire George, very well said.  I plan on doing the same.  John:  I have enjoyed your photo's for years and have saved a lot of them to my computer for my car collection.  You take outstanding photo's more than I can say I can.  I still only collect 1/24 models and it is definitely tougher to find good ones, but there are still many that I never purchased from the mints, so from time to time I can find one of them on the auction sites and add it to my collection.  With over 1000 cars and all on display in my home office, I get to enjoy everyday I am working.

This Olds is long time favorite of mine.  GREAT pics.

You're so lucky to know your models will go to a new home.  I don't have any hope of that but I hope my kids at least try to get something out of the collection.  But I'll never know anyway after I'm gone.

I've really pared back my new acquisitions and keep telling myself not to buy any more.  But, I've bought 3 in the last couple of weeks and and have my eye on another.  I'm hopeless. 😂

I am blessed. The idea was my grandsons, this last month I finally retired my 2008 F150, it's actually been out of commission for the last six+ months anyway. My grandson is 15 and car crazy and wants to fix it up, so I gave it to him to tinker with. After that, he discussed the idea he had with his mom, and she talked to me about it. He has always loved to look at my models and now wants to make sure that he always can.

Glad to hear the succession is in place John.  Your grandson sounds like a great kid.

With 6,000 plus models and no children my collection will be up for grabs when I'm gone. My wife and I had a discussion about this very subject about a month ago when she asked if I still enjoy my collection and the occasional addition to which I said yes...she said then why would you not continue to enjoy it. Now understand we have not done zero planning as it might seem. The first thing I have done is to attach to my will the names of dealers who buy collections and their contact information. The second thing we have done is named an executor with instructions on the charity who is to receive the proceeds of our estate when the two of us are gone. The third thing we have done is to include a young man who has been like a son to us in our will and he has agreed to help organize an inventory and mate the models with their respective boxes. I'm sure that I could sell the models for more money one by one but I'm afraid that would take more time than want to devote to the task. As George said above, this was never intended to be an investment but rather a hobby.

Glad to hear that you have such a wonderful grandson !

Kudos to his parents for bringing him up right and to you too for being his Grandfather.
