Chevy was 2 years late in the game offering its El Camino pickup to compete with the popular Ford Ranchero. Because the Ranchero was based on their station wagon, it was unique with the bed and body as one structure. Chevy offered the same type platform in the El Camino. By 1959 Ford's top engine was the 300 HP 352 4bbl. So Chevy topped that with their 348 cid that produced 320 HP with a 4bbl card and 345 HP with a 3X2bbl setup. As cool as the El Camino was it was outsold by the Ranchero. Few bought these utility vehicles back then with the larger engines and as cool as the El Camino looks, Ranchero's bed was 7' long compared to the El Camino's 6'9" bed length.
love having it my collection, but I've always felt the body style, fins particularly, look just too 'swanky' for a ute. Thanks Rich
I agree with Geoff. I think most buyers of such a utility would have preferred a more straight-forward, no nonsense pick-up, such as the Ranchero. Even though the fabulous Delta wing looks great on the flatbed.
@grockwood That's a pretty sharp Ranchero Gary. I've got a fondness for the '59 Fords, Dad had a black/white 2 door hardtop when I was a kid, loved that car. I've always loved the old full size Elco's and Ranchero's. Seeing the title, I thought I was going to see a beat up Ranchero diecast, lol. That's a beauty Rich.😛😎💯
