9 Mercedes-Benz 300SLRs were built between 1954 and 1955. As 2 seat sports cars, they were based on the open wheeled W196 R but with a larger 3.0 liter fuel injected straight 8 producing 300 HP. 2 of the 9 were given gull wing coupe bodies known as the "Uhlenhaut" for the designer/engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut. The first 300 SLR, the famous #722, debuted with a win in the 1955 Mille Miglia sporting the Union Jack and driven by Sir Sterling Moss and Denis Jenkinson. Later that car would be fitted with a mechanical air brake for endurance races to help save brakes and tires.
