The 1942 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon aka "The Barrelback" was touted as a "limousine for the country". The curved 'barrelback' doors were only seen on earlier models of this luxuriously appointed interior and lavish wooden frame of ash with mahogany panels. The 108 hp 241.5 cid flathead six put the power through a 4 speed semi-automatic transmission. It was built on the longer Windsor chassis and, with the folding rear facing seats, was considered a 9 passenger. The 9 passenger configuration was the most popular with 849 built. One beautiful example, which originally sold for $1695 was recently auctioned for $345K. The more rare 6 passenger model (150 made) went for around $450K. Most rare is the single straight 8 (1) and the last January 1942 build had blacked out chrome (so it couldn't be spotted by Japanese bombers, I assume).
Black provides great contrast for this well done model.
one of my real had to haves when I first discovered DM quality from here in Australia 20+ years ago. Great historical facts and pics thanks Rich.
Wonderful pictures and writeup Rich. I'm fortunate to have this and the green one as well.
