This is a really old Bburago 1/24 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K roadster with rumble seat. It's actually about as good as FM's old release at 5 times the price. Made in Italy back 30 years ago, they only sprayed the outside of the panels an the inner aspects received only overspray (see engine compartment pic). I jazzed the model up with blackwash painted trim and weathering on the upholstery and tonneau cover to get rid of the plastic look and displayed it with the other vintage Mercs.. I noticed the tires were branded and I assumed the were the traditional Continentals but couldn't really read them. I was looking at the pics I took back in 2012 and could barely make out that they weren't Continental tires. I blew up and enhanced the one pic and it read "Englebert". The only 'Englebert' I knew of had the last name Humperdinck. It turns out that there was a Belgian company, Englebert Tyres that was established in 1868 by Oscar Englebert that in the '30s were the tires to have in racing and sports cars. They were the first tires to last the entire 24 hours of Le Mans. Post war, they entered into partnership with Uniroyal with the name Uniroyal Englebert. Uniroyal bought out Englebert and then a year later, sold the company to... Continental Tires. Kudos to Bburago for giving me a history lesson 30 years later.
great story Rich. Love automotive history. To me it encompasses aspects of engineering, technical, design, social, cultural, economic, national identity and even political history. Your Mercedes looks great. When I opened the page I did think it was the FM that started all this for me 36 years ago.
